Tensions flare at Richmond council meeting over resolution accusing Israel of ‘ethnic cleansing’

After an emotionally charged hearing that drew hundreds of public comments, the Richmond City Council voted 5-1 Wednesday morning to approve a resolution that recognizes the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza and accuses Israel of ethnic cleansing.

The vote, shortly after 1 a.m., was followed by chants from the energetic crowd: “Free free Palestine!”
