Protect Abortion Rights: Yes on Prop 1

September 14, 2022
Posted by: JCRC Staff

Today, JCRC is thrilled to launch our YES ON PROP 1 campaign.

With alarm over the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade, and broad consensus in our Jewish community to support reproductive rights, now is the time to act.

Proposition 1 on the November 2022 ballot would inscribe the right to an abortion and contraception in our California constitution. With so much uncertainty at the federal level, and state-level restrictions and bans taking place, California must take the lead to ensure abortion rights and access.

JCRC's campaign is not only about reproductive rights, but also religious freedom. As a minority faith group, Jewish Americans must stand for religious freedom to ensure our laws do not favor one religious belief over another.

Prop 1 will make Californians more secure, set an example for other states, and send a message to people in need of abortion services that they are welcome in the Golden State.

We cannot be complacent. While surveys show Californians overwhelmingly support abortion rights, we cannot take it for granted this will pass.

Please join our YES ON PROP 1 campaign!

"By supporting Prop 1, we affirm that reproductive care and abortion access are essential healthcare. Anti-choice legislation disproportionately impacts the most marginalized members of our community, particularly people of color, immigrants, people living with disabilities, LGTBQ+ individuals, and people struggling financially."
     Rabbi Rebecca Hecht
     Peninsula Temple Beth-El

"It’s complicated to be grateful for abortion when the situations that lead to them are filled with so much pain and agony. But I am grateful that when I was diagnosed with early onset preeclampsia at 21 weeks pregnant that I had a choice, and that choice was guided by Jewish values. Judaism is a religion that values life. But when sources are tested with the complicated question of 'whose life,' Judaism affirms that protecting existing life is paramount at all stages of pregnancy."
     Rabbi Lisa Kingston

"As well as any other people, Jews know the dangers of allowing the state to take away our rights and impinge personal freedoms. The right to care for one’s body, mind, and soul is a fundamental human right. Please join me in voting YES this November on California’s Proposition 1."
