Ethnic Studies in California Schools—What to Expect
July 15, 2020
Featuring Assemblymember Jose Medina
In anticipation of the public release of a revised draft of the California Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum by the California Department of Education later this summer, JCRC is hosting a deep dive into its context, current process and next steps. Questions that will be addressed include:
- What is ethnic studies and how is California bringing it into classrooms?
- How did teaching it in public schools become controversial?
- What are the stakes for the Jewish community?
In addition to an address by Assemblymember Medina, this webinar will also include an update from the JCRC professionals who've led community efforts to assure the Model Curriculum is rigorous, responsive to the current moment, fairly portrays Israel, celebrates Jewish identity, and does not include problematic, antisemitic elements.
