JCRC seeks a dedicated, skilled, and tactful professional to serve as our Assistant Director of Jewish Community Engagement, to help convene, educate and empower the Bay Area Jewish community to create a Bay Area where all people can thrive. This individual will work closely with key JCRC staff, Council members, and grassroots groups to implement our ongoing programmatic strategy that advances JCRC’s critical community relations work, including addressing rising antisemitism and hate, delegitimization of Israel, widening racial and economic inequities, and the weakening of our democracy.

We are looking for a dynamic community builder with experience in grassroots organizing, non-profit organizations, Jewish community relations, policy, and/or advocacy.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Convene, educate, and activate the Jewish community across the Bay Area to become more involved in JCRC’s ongoing work.

  • Coordinate community member engagement and grassroots advocacy efforts across the Bay Area
    • Identify, cultivate, and support grassroots groups and emerging Jewish leaders, and serve as their liaison to JCRC.
    • Provide educational opportunities to build key skills (including organizing and leadership development training) for group leaders as appropriate.
    • Conduct outreach to and encourage diverse Jewish communities and groups to participate in JCRC programming and advocacy.
  • Increase engagement of diverse Bay Area Jewish communities, with an emphasis on strengthening representation of historically underrepresented groups in Jewish life.
  • In partnership with the Director of Jewish Community Engagement:
    • Support the ongoing work and goals of the JCRC Council, our non-fiduciary leadership and deliberative body, which consists of member organizations (synagogues and Jewish agencies) and independent members (JCRC lay leaders representing diverse constituencies across the Bay Area Jewish community).
    • Ensure working committees of the Council are aligned with broader organizational strategy, and build organizational capacity to strengthen our field work in the Jewish and civic arenas.
    • Organize Jewish community programming, collaborations, and events with Jewish and civic agencies that further JCRC’s advocacy and policy goals.
    • Represent JCRC at Jewish community events, including some evenings and weekend obligations.

Work collaboratively with JCRC staff to:

  • Mobilize the Jewish community to take action on policy and advocacy issues of ongoing or acute concern to JCRC, the Jewish community, and our civic partners.
  • Validate and lift up participants with diverse viewpoints and lived experiences, and work to build consensus where possible.
  • Promote a strong culture of philanthropic support for JCRC among lay leaders and community members.
  • Promote and support JCRC programs and trainings on Jewish identity, advocacy, antisemitism, and related topics.

Miscellaneous responsibilities

  • Regularly enter data and contact information into Salesforce.
  • Assist with administrative and operational needs of the Jewish Community Engagement team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of and/or experience with the many dimensions of Jewish life, including Jewish traditions; religious denominations and practices; cultural diversity; Israel; antisemitism; Jewish identity; education; and institutions.
  • At least two years experience, and training in community organizing principles.
  • At least three years’ experience in a professional or volunteer capacity in the Bay Area Jewish community.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in community and intergroup relations, advocacy, policy, and government affairs.
  • Familiarity with Salesforce.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in related field(s).
  • Ability to effectively engage with diverse people, communities, and cultures.
  • Strong administrative and organizational skills, including the ability to appropriately manage and prioritize multiple responsibilities.
  • Interpersonal skills, including a proven ability to work with and influence a wide variety of people, diplomatic, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Strong communicator with excellent writing and public speaking skills.
  • Strong commitment to and alignment with JCRC’s organizational mission of bringing together diverse Jewish communities with our neighbors to build a just society and a secure Jewish future.
  • Ability to use or quickly learn JCRC’s database and communication systems.
  • The desire to work in a demanding, fast-paced environment with a talented team of goal-oriented, strategic, and caring professional and volunteer leaders.
  • Flexible hybrid office schedule. Local travel required, as well as possible occasional travel to conferences across California.
